Generally, health clinics can be defined as medical centers run and manned by doctors, specialists, nurses and other employees in the health care industry. These can either be government owned and controlled or operated by private companies. Oftentimes, health clinics are small but highly equipped facilities that can provide immediate care for outpatients and ambulatory patients as well as offer diagnosis and medical advice or opinion. The main objective of health clinics is to effectively provide health and other related services not only to individuals but to partner laboratories, hospitals and treatment centers. More often than not, health clinics also sell medicine the way pharmacies do. The functions of health clinics vary based on the country where they are located, the types of people living there, and types of businesses operating in that area. For instance, first world countries can afford to operate government controlled or subsidized clinics while lesser developing countries can only support for-profit clinics where expenses are shouldered by the patient. These days, however, the purpose and services of centers are no longer limited. They have changed and upgraded along with the demands of the times. If before people thought that health clinics provided general medical services, there now are centers that cater to specific concerns. For instance, sexual health clinics are now in existence and these specialize in the treatment of sex-related matters such as venereal diseases and sexually transmitted diseases. In these same centers, rape victims and those considering abortion can seek psychological counseling. There are health clinics that cater specifically to homosexuals, and ethnic minorities. Mental health clinics offer help for the mentally ill. Sports health clinics mostly cater to professional sportsmen and to serious sports buffs. Foot health clinics that concentrate on how to treat and prevent foot injuries and occupational health clinics that normally partner with companies or employers. Even with the presence of hospitals and other larger treatment facilities, health clinics will still remain as a preferred choice since most of these clinics do not require appointments and patients can visit right away. They also have most of the medicines and equipment needed for treating various problems. Many clinics have x-ray machines and even surgical items with a licensed medical staff. One can still be sure that the same services he or she may obtain from a larger medical facility can also be obtained from clinics although of the services may be limited at times. Health clinics’ smaller and “homey” environments make patients feel more comfortable. Apart from some limited services, these centers also have other drawbacks. More often than not, these centers are not open 24/7. An injured person needs to be taken to a full service hospital in the wee hours of the morning. Nonetheless, people will still consider going to health clinics because there are many benefits in store.
